The Dallas Mavericks are waiving veteran big man Dwight Powell, who was entering his 13th season with the team, according to the Dallas Morning News’ Mike Curtis. The Mavericks later confirmed the news.
Powell was re-signed a month ago ahead of training camp and competed in the preseason for a backup center role, but ultimately did not make the roster.
The Mavericks will roster Dereck Lively, Daniel Gafford, and Mousa Cisse at center.
Rookie first-round pick Morez Johnson, Jr. may also get some time at center as well as forward.
Powell, a 12-year veteran who has spent the vast majority of his NBA career in Dallas, has averaged 6.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 17.5 minutes in 768 games. Among Mavericks all-time leaders, Powell ranks fourth in career field goal percentage (.606), fifth in games played (763), sixth in offensive rebounds (1,187), sixth in total rebounds (3,251), and 10th in blocks (330).
“Dwight was the consummate professional throughout his 12 seasons with the Mavericks and embodies everything you want in someone representing your organization,” said Mavericks President of Basketball Operations Masai Ujiri. “He’s a tireless worker, an incredible teammate, and someone whose impact extends well beyond the basketball court and into the Dallas community. We are grateful for everything Dwight has contributed to this franchise. He will always be part of the Mavericks family, and Dallas will always be a home for him. We wish him nothing but the best in this next chapter.”
Powell is also an advocate for childhood literacy and a fan of fashion.
The Mavericks season opener is Wednesday night in Houston.
